On December 16, 2025, China's "Linghang" shield tunneling machine, the world’s largest for high-speed rail, surpassed 10,000 meters of excavation beneath the Yangtze River.
The tunnel, part of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway, spans 14.25 kilometers from Chongming, Shanghai, to Taicang, Jiangsu, and is designed for 350 km/h trains.
