Barking and Dagenham Council rejected plans to turn the closed Harrow pub into a mosque, citing its status as a community asset.
Barking and Dagenham Council has denied a proposal to convert the closed Harrow pub in Chadwell Heath into an Islamic place of worship, citing the need to preserve the pub as a community asset amid London’s declining number of pubs.
The application, submitted by Mr. M. Jamal, lacked details on attendance and activity schedules and failed to show all efforts were made to retain the pub use.
Though 20 of 24 neighbors supported the change, the council prioritized protecting the pub’s status.
The building, now used by the Al Noor Masjid and Education Trust for community activities, is being renovated with public donations.
