Austria will allow Palestinian flags and audience reactions at Eurovision 2025 despite boycotts, upholding free expression.
Austria’s ORF, host broadcaster for the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, confirmed it will not ban the Palestinian flag or suppress audience booing during Israel’s performance, upholding free expression amid a boycott by five countries.
The contest will feature 35 entries, the fewest since 2003, following protests over Israel’s participation in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attacks and the ensuing war in Gaza, which has resulted in over 70,700 reported Palestinian deaths.
ORF stated it will broadcast events without censorship, allowing all legal flags and unfiltered audience reactions.
Israel’s 2025 entrant, Yuval Raphael, survived the Nova music festival attack.
The event drew 166 million viewers in 2024, surpassing the Super Bowl’s viewership.
