Archbishop Coakley condemns deadly Dec. 14 Sydney Hanukkah attack, supports Jewish community.
Archbishop Paul Coakley of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed solidarity with the Jewish community following a December 14, 2025, terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney during a Hanukkah celebration.
The attack, carried out by two gunmen, killed 15 people, including a child, a rabbi, and two Holocaust survivors, and injured over 40 others.
One gunman was killed at the scene, the other captured in critical condition.
Coakley condemned the violence, calling it a reminder of enduring hatred, and praised a Muslim man who disarmed one attacker.
He emphasized shared values of light overcoming darkness during Hanukkah and Advent, reaffirming Catholic support for Jews in sorrow and resolve.
