AIMIM to run independently in 27 Maharashtra cities Jan. 15 elections if no alliance forms.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) plans to contest Maharashtra’s January 15 municipal elections independently in 27 of the state’s 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, if no alliance materializes, according to party leaders.
The party, aiming to expand beyond its Bihar success, is preparing strong candidate lists and remains open to joining the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, though no formal agreement has been reached.
The State Election Commission has set voting for January 15 and counting for January 16 in major cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune, with over 1.03 crore voters in Mumbai alone.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the elections, affirming the Mahayuti alliance’s unified stance in most areas, though Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP will run separately in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to avoid splitting votes.
AIMIM leader Waris Pathan criticized exclusion from major alliances and questioned BJP opposition to candidates from certain communities, highlighting issues like farmer distress and inflation.
