The University of Cumbria’s medical research hub received £1.2M to fund seven health projects addressing local care gaps, including cancer and heart failure, with NHS partnerships and public engagement.
The University of Cumbria’s Pears Cumbria School of Medicine Research Hub has received £1.2 million from the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre to fund seven two-year health research projects and fellowships.
The initiative, a partnership with the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, focuses on local healthcare challenges including cancer prehabilitation, heart failure under-diagnosis in older adults, and rural disparities in cancer and maternal care.
Each project receives £50,000 and is co-led by university and NHS staff.
The hub also offers research fellowships at multiple levels and holds monthly public webinars to engage communities, with goals to reduce health inequalities and improve care through locally driven evidence.
