Two Irish men sentenced to prison for robbing a cyclist, despite prior chances at rehabilitation.
Two Dublin men, Lee Byrne, 24, and Sam Garvey, 26, were sentenced to two and a half years in prison with 18 months suspended after pleading guilty to a violent mobile phone robbery on October 1, 2022.
The attack on a cyclist left the victim with head injuries and lasting emotional trauma.
Both men had been given a chance at rehabilitation after a one-year adjournment, but reoffended—Byrne is serving a separate two-year sentence, and Garvey is incarcerated until May for other crimes—leading the judge to impose custody.
The stolen phone was recovered from Garvey, who claimed he bought it, while Byrne denied assaulting the victim but admitted a minor role.
The court acknowledged their efforts to address addiction but stressed that reoffending undermined trust and justified the sentence.
