Texas music icon Joe Ely, 78, died in Taos from dementia, Parkinson’s, and pneumonia, leaving a legacy in country and Americana.
Joe Ely, the 78-year-old Texas singer-songwriter and key figure in the progressive country and Americana movements, has died in Taos, New Mexico, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pneumonia.
Born in Amarillo and raised in Lubbock, he helped shape Austin’s music scene, co-founded the Flatlanders, and influenced artists including the Clash and Bruce Springsteen.
A 1970s MCA Records signing, he released acclaimed solo albums and toured globally.
Inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame and Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, his final album, “Love and Freedom,” came out in 2023.
Tributes honored his legacy from Lubbock and beyond.
