Taiwan strengthens undersea cable security with new laws imposing fines and vessel seizures for violations.
On December 16, 2025, Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan passed amendments to four laws to strengthen protections for undersea cables and critical infrastructure.
The changes require vessels in Taiwan’s waters to maintain accurate automatic identification systems and hull markings, impose fines up to NT$10 million for violations, and allow confiscation of vessels and equipment used to damage undersea cables or obstruct ports.
Penalties for damaging weather facilities include up to six months in prison or fines of NT$2 million.
The measures aim to enhance national security amid growing concerns over infrastructure threats.
