Six states passed laws restricting DEI in colleges, impacting equity programs and marginalized communities.
A new USC report tracks anti-DEI legislation in six states—Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas—where laws restricting diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education have been introduced or enacted between August 2024 and July 2025.
These measures ban DEI offices, eliminate training, restrict race- and gender-based preferences, and prohibit critical race theory courses.
While all except Missouri passed such laws, Missouri introduced the most bills without enacting any.
Some private universities, like Vanderbilt, have voluntarily made similar changes.
The report warns these rollbacks harm marginalized students and staff by dismantling support systems, reducing access to equity-focused aid, and causing job losses.
Experts stress that while DEI visibility is declining, its goals remain essential, urging universities to adapt and advocate for inclusion amid growing political and legal pressures.
