Sault Ste. Marie council opposes Ontario’s plan to merge 36 conservation authorities into seven, fearing loss of local control and expertise.
Sault Ste.
Marie city council is urging the Ontario government to maintain current conservation authorities in Northern Ontario, opposing a plan to consolidate 36 local bodies into seven regional ones.
Council members argue the change could weaken local governance, reduce responsiveness to regional environmental risks, and shift administrative control away from the area.
They fear the proposed Northeastern Ontario Regional Conservation Authority would dilute local expertise and divert municipal tax dollars.
The province says the consolidation would streamline services, cut costs, and better align efforts with provincial priorities like housing and climate resilience.
Public feedback is open until December 22, 2025, with the existing system staying in place until at least October 2026.
