NHS Tayside destroyed 40 critical surgery logs linked to a disgraced surgeon, defying a ban, sparking outrage and an ongoing investigation.
A patient advocacy group is demanding that NHS Tayside’s top leaders explain how about 40 hard-copy theatre logbooks from 1995 to 2013—linked to disgraced neurosurgeon Sam Eljamel—were destroyed in July 2025, despite a “do not destroy” order from the Eljamel Inquiry chairman.
The group called the incident a serious breach, suggesting it reflects ongoing cultural failures, whether due to incompetence or cover-up.
NHS Tayside admitted staff mistakenly placed the documents in confidential waste, unaware of their significance, and has since launched an internal probe, notified police and the inquiry, and commissioned an external review.
First Minister John Swinney called it an error in handling, while Health Secretary Neil Gray sought assurances.
The patients’ group expressed disappointment, saying the destruction undermines trust in the inquiry.
