New Zealand’s longest pedestrian bridge, a 189-meter swing structure, is under construction across the Hooker River in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, replacing a closed bridge due to erosion.
Facing extreme weather including winds up to 150 km/h and heavy snow, construction began in August 2025 and has progressed with support masts drilled and wind anchors being installed, with cable assembly set for early 2026.
Designed by Dan Crocker of DC Structures Studio, the bridge features advanced wind and vibration controls to minimize environmental impact.
DOC expects the bridge to open by late autumn 2026, weather permitting, after delays.
The upper Hooker Valley Track remains closed, with security cameras in place to prevent unauthorized access.
