Myanmar's junta intensifies offensive using conscripts and drones, reclaiming territory ahead of disputed 2025 election.
Myanmar’s military junta has intensified its offensive against rebel forces in late 2025, using conscripted soldiers, drones, and reported human-wave attacks, according to rebels and analysts.
Since launching nationwide conscription in February 2024, the junta has recruited an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 new troops, helping it reclaim territory in at least three states.
The military, now around 134,000 strong, has replaced inexperienced officers and expanded its drone fleet.
These gains coincide with a December 28, 2025, general election widely condemned as unfair, with key opposition figures still detained.
Despite increased momentum, control remains fragmented across Myanmar’s frontlines, and analysts warn of further clashes ahead.
