Maine ends most cooperation with ICE, barring detentions for immigration status alone.
Maine Governor Janet Mills has allowed LD 1971 to become law without her signature, ending state and local cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) except in criminal investigations.
The law prohibits police from detaining or searching individuals solely for immigration reasons and bans notifying ICE about undocumented individuals in custody.
Mills cited aggressive federal immigration enforcement under President Trump’s administration as a key reason, calling the bill necessary despite its flaws.
She also repealed a 2011 executive order that encouraged state-ICE collaboration.
The move follows concerns over due process, family separations, and fear in immigrant communities.
Maine termina la mayor parte de la cooperación con ICE, excluyendo las detenciones por el estatus de inmigración.
