A Kerala CPM leader sparked backlash for sexist remarks after winning a panchayat seat with a narrow margin.
A Communist Party of India (Marxist) regional leader in Kerala, Saed Ali Majeed, drew widespread condemnation after winning a panchayat seat with 666 votes, just 47 more than his opponent.
In his victory speech, he made controversial remarks suggesting women brought into families through marriage should not be involved in politics or shown publicly, implying their primary role is domestic.
He also told women not willing to endure political criticism to stay home as housewives and criticized the president of the IUML’s Women’s League.
The comments, widely shared on social media, were labeled misogynistic and incompatible with democratic values.
Despite the backlash, the CPM has not issued an official response as of December 15, 2025.
