Kansas selects Matthew Baker as next ESU president, effective March 2026.
The Kansas Board of Regents has chosen Matthew Baker, a Kansas native and 30-year higher education administrator from Northwest Missouri State University, as the next president of Emporia State University, effective March 2026.
Baker, who holds advanced degrees from the University of Arkansas and the University of Missouri, served as vice president of student affairs at Northwest Missouri State since 2009 and began his career there in 1993.
He succeeds Ken Hush, who led the university from 2021 to 2025 amid controversy over faculty dismissals and program cuts that contributed to enrollment declines and legal challenges.
Hush plans to retire and will donate $1.4 million to support student recruitment, scholarships, and operations.
Baker plans to conduct a listening tour and prioritize shared governance, communication, and data-driven strategies.
