Hong Kong's Jimmy Lai, 78, faces life in prison after being convicted under the national security law; his daughter says he’s severely ill from isolation and hopes to focus on faith and family if freed.
Jimmy Lai, a 78-year-old former Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy advocate, would focus on family and faith if released from prison, his daughter Claire Lai said in a Washington interview on December 15, 2025.
Lai, convicted under Hong Kong’s national security law on charges of colluding with foreign forces and publishing seditious material, faces a potential life sentence after five years in custody, much of it in solitary confinement.
His daughter described his health as severely deteriorated—citing weight loss, chronic pain, failing vision and hearing, diabetes, heart issues, and dental decay—attributing the decline to prolonged isolation.
She said he has turned to religious art and wishes to serve God and reunite with his family.
International pressure is mounting, with U.S. and UK officials calling for his release, while Hong Kong authorities maintain the trial was fair and that Lai received full medical care.
