Invasive quagga mussels found in Northern Ireland’s Lower Lough Erne likely came via waterways and threaten ecosystems and infrastructure.
The quagga mussel, an invasive species from Eastern Europe, has been confirmed for the first time in Northern Ireland, detected in Lower Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, through DNA analysis.
Officials warn the mussel, which can outcompete native species, clog water infrastructure, and disrupt ecosystems, likely arrived via the Shannon–Erne waterway corridor and may already be present in connected waterways like Upper Lough Erne and Lough Neagh.
With no effective way to eradicate established populations, authorities are urging all water users to follow the "Check, Clean, Dry" biosecurity protocol to prevent further spread, while surveillance and cross-border cooperation through the Shared Island Biosecurity Initiative are ongoing.
