Dr. Zara Stanhope, a New Zealand-based Australian-born arts leader, has been named director of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, starting March 2, 2026.
She succeeds Kirsten Lacy and returns to the gallery after previously leading its programs from 2013 to 2017.
With over 30 years of experience, including roles at major institutions like QAGOMA and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Stanhope has curated more than 50 exhibitions, including New Zealand’s Venice Biennale entry in 2019.
She holds a PhD and has contributed to key publications on Māori art.
Her appointment, the fourth in a row for an Australian-born director, underscores her deep ties to Aotearoa’s art scene and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, regional artists, and public engagement.
