COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy cuts severe illness, ICU needs, and preterm birth risk, a Canadian study finds.
A new study published in JAMA by the University of British Columbia finds that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, intensive care admission, and preterm birth.
Analyzing data from nearly 20,000 pregnant individuals in Canada between April 2021 and December 2022, researchers found vaccinated pregnant people were about 60% less likely to be hospitalized and 90% less likely to need intensive care if infected with COVID-19.
The risk of premature birth was reduced by 20% during the Delta wave and 36% during the Omicron wave.
Vaccination during pregnancy was linked to greater protection against preterm birth than vaccination before pregnancy.
The findings support ongoing recommendations for pregnant individuals to get vaccinated to protect both mother and baby.
