Canada launches 2026 task force and $9M investment to boost softwood lumber industry amid trade challenges.
The Canadian government, led by Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, is launching a task force in early 2026 to boost the competitiveness of the softwood lumber industry.
The group will assess ways to improve productivity, expand markets, and promote modern wood construction, with input from industry, Indigenous groups, communities, and labor.
It will deliver recommendations within 90 days.
As part of a broader strategy, Ottawa is investing $9 million in projects to advance innovative wood products like mass timber, support code changes, and overcome insurance barriers.
The initiative comes amid ongoing trade challenges, including U.S. tariffs, and follows over $2.35 billion in federal support since August 2025, including funding for innovation, worker training, and infrastructure procurement.
