YOWE project cut HIV treatment defaults in Ghana from 35% to 23% by May 2025 via outreach and counseling.
The Youth and Women Empowerment (YOWE) project in Ghana’s Lower Manya Krobo Municipality reduced HIV treatment default rates from 35% in May 2024 to 23% by May 2025, re-enrolling 591 people into care through community outreach and trained volunteers.
The initiative, funded by the STAR Ghana Foundation and supported by local health institutions, improved data accuracy, addressed stigma, and provided counseling to 3,273 people living with HIV.
A second phase launched in December 2025 will continue tracing and support efforts through July 2026.
Meanwhile, in the Volta Region, low condom use among young people, especially adolescent girls and young women, remains a major barrier to reducing new HIV infections, with high prevalence among key populations and limited ART access.
