Two brothers, Syed Syed, 31, and Heshmad Ahmady, 32, avoided immediate jail after admitting to smuggling Quadjia Rokuzeh, an Afghan asylum seeker, into the UK by hiding her in a Range Rover’s boot at Harwich Port in March 2024.
The woman, who fled persecution and traveled across Europe via lorries, was found after the car’s back seats were altered to allow her movement.
Though both denied knowledge, evidence including a WhatsApp group called “Family meet up” linked them.
Sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court noted no financial motive, lack of prior convictions, and family circumstances, including Ahmady’s four children, three with neuro-diverse conditions.
Both received two-year suspended sentences, 200 hours of unpaid work, and a £187 surcharge.
