Their departure follows a bilateral loan agreement and comes after the repatriation of four pandas from Wakayama Prefecture in 2025 and their parents in 2024.
Despite Tokyo’s request to keep them, China declined, citing strained diplomatic relations, including recent remarks by Japan’s prime minister on Taiwan.
Japan seeks new pandas, but a replacement before their departure is unlikely.
