A truck driver got a suspended sentence for a 2024 crash that killed an elderly couple, after using meth two days prior and being distracted.
A 53-year-old truck driver, Antonios Maounis Van Eldik, received a five-month suspended prison sentence for causing the deaths of an elderly couple, Max and Jan Tonks, in a 2024 crash on Hobart’s Bowen Bridge.
The accident occurred when Van Eldik, who had used methylamphetamine two days prior, was distracted reaching for a dropped cigarette.
He had six prior driving offenses, including driving under the influence and while disqualified, and was caught driving without a seatbelt and using a phone after the crash.
His daughter, injured in the crash, suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety.
The court imposed a one-year community correction order, 100 hours of community service, four months of home detention, and a 2.5-year driving disqualification, with the suspended sentence contingent on no further jailable offenses for two years.
