Supreme Court questions elite-paid access to temple pujas, citing tradition and fairness.
The Supreme Court has raised concerns over reports that wealthy devotees are being granted special, paid access to pujas at the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan during the deity’s resting hours, calling the practice exploitative and contrary to tradition.
The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, issued notice to the temple’s management committee and Uttar Pradesh government, scrutinizing changes to darshan timings and the suspension of rituals like Dehri Pooja.
The bench emphasized the need to preserve religious traditions and ensure equitable access, while noting that the temple remains under a court-appointed 14-member management committee.
The case is scheduled for hearing in early January 2026.
