South Africa demands completion of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project by 2028/2029 amid delays and relocation concerns.
South Africa’s Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has stressed that Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project must be completed by 2028/2029, with no further delays tolerated.
During an oversight visit to Lesotho, she noted 48% completion of the Polihali Transfer Tunnel and over 60 meters of concrete placed in the 165-meter Polihali Dam.
Only 24 of about 300 affected households have been relocated, with 105 replacement homes under construction.
Majodina raised concerns over slow progress, relocation requests beyond treaty limits, and lack of transparency in spending on infrastructure.
The project, costing R53 billion, aims to deliver 490 million cubic meters of water annually to South Africa, boost hydropower, and create around 16,000 jobs.
