Russia's Supreme Court upheld 2022 convictions in the 2011 murder of Dagestani journalist Khadzhimurad Kamalov, linked to his reporting.
Russia’s Supreme Court has upheld the 2022 convictions of four men for the 2011 murder of Dagestani journalist Khadzhimurad Kamalov, whose killing was linked to his investigative reporting.
Former deputy prime minister Shamil Isayev was sentenced to 16 years, while three others received 16 to 24 years.
Isayev’s appeal was rejected despite his claimed military service and injury.
The case remains disputed by Kamalov’s family and Chernovik’s editorial board, who believe it was politically motivated.
In a separate case, a Dagestani court upheld a 7.5-year sentence for former officer Islam Atavov in the 2023 death of Kurban Dalgatov, who died after alleged torture during detention.
Atavov’s alleged death in Ukraine remains unconfirmed, and the case continues with four others to be tried.
