Prosecutors will drop attempted murder charge against Aaron Searle, who was shot by police during a domestic violence-related attack in February.
Prosecutors in New South Wales are preparing to drop an attempted murder charge against Aaron Barrie Searle, 47, who was shot by police in Mayfield on February 15 after allegedly attacking officers with a bladed tactical shovel during a domestic violence-related incident.
Police responded to Hanbury Street around 4:10 p.m., and after Searle assaulted a senior constable and a taser failed, officers shot him in the stomach.
He underwent surgery and spent over a week recovering at John Hunter Hospital before being taken into custody.
Initially charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, Searle’s case is moving toward committal in Newcastle Local Court, where prosecutors plan to withdraw the attempted murder charge.
He is expected to plead guilty to lesser charges related to assaulting police.
The incident is under investigation by Strike Force Arbor and subject to an independent review, with the case set to return to court on Wednesday.
