On May 26, 2025, paramedic Jay Vernon, 34, was struck by a car driven by Paul Doyle, 54, during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade celebrations.
Vernon, responding to a cardiac arrest call, was hit from behind on Water Street, thrown into a gutter, and saw the vehicle reverse toward him, leading him to believe it was a terrorist attack.
He activated his emergency radio, treated multiple injured bystanders—including children—amid chaos, and later took shelter in an ambulance.
Doyle, who had a history of mental health issues and was driving under the influence, pleaded guilty to 31 offences, including attempted murder, and is set to be sentenced.
The crash injured 134 people, including 29 emergency responders.
Vernon, one of those injured, expressed relief that he did not have to testify after Doyle’s guilty plea.
