More than 500 Burundian civilians have returned home after fleeing to the Democratic Republic of the Congo following renewed fighting triggered by the M23 militia’s capture of Uvira in early December.
The offensive, which breached a recent U.S.-brokered peace deal, disrupted supply routes and deepened a long-running displacement crisis that has forced over 200,000 people from their homes since 2021.
M23 now controls the Burundi border and is advancing toward Baraka and Fizi, while Uvira remains tense despite a fragile calm.
UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix warned the situation risks wider regional escalation and further fragmentation of eastern Congo.
