Martin Lewis urges UK to fix Universal Credit system blocking claimants from switching banks.
Consumer advocate Martin Lewis has urged the UK's Department for Work and Pensions to fix a system blocking millions of Universal Credit recipients from switching bank accounts.
In a December 12, 2025, letter to Secretary Pat McFadden, Lewis said current rules—requiring in-person Jobcentre visits and failing to accommodate digital banks—create unnecessary barriers.
He warned these restrictions prevent claimants from accessing better interest rates, switching bonuses, and improved financial products, harming financial wellbeing and competition.
Lewis called for immediate reform to ensure fair access to banking options and support financial inclusion for low-income households.
