A man denies intentionally confronting and shoving a man who later died, claiming fear he was armed.
A 26-year-old man, Jesse Allan, denies intentionally seeking out Matthew Williams, 37, during a series of confrontations in Manly, Sydney, on January 27, 2024, which led to Williams’ fatal head injuries after a shove captured on CCTV and phone footage.
Allan, who was intoxicated and used MDMA, said he acted in fear Williams was armed and claimed he pushed him twice—once to protect others during a separate altercation and again during a confrontation where Williams raised his arms defensively.
Williams, who had thrown a water bottle and shouted insults, died 10 days later.
Allan pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May but disputes the prosecution’s claim he pursued Williams to assert dominance.
The trial continues.
