Kingston Police are urging downtown businesses to join CAMSafe, a provincial voluntary registry for private security cameras launched in 2021.
The program, inspired by initiatives in Red Deer and Philadelphia, allows individuals and businesses to register CCTV systems online without sharing login details.
Police can then quickly identify nearby cameras during investigations, speeding up responses to crimes like break-ins and assaults.
Since October, Kingston’s registered cameras have grown from two to nearly 60.
As of December 2025, over 10,000 cameras are registered across Ontario at more than 6,000 locations, supported by the OPP and multiple police services.
Registration is voluntary, and footage access requires individual permission each time, ensuring privacy.
