Kazuya Sugimoto, a 43-year-old former city assembly member backed by the Democratic Party for the People, won Ito’s mayoral election on December 14, defeating former mayor Tatsuya Ono and former mayor Maki Takubo, who was removed from office in October after falsifying her academic credentials.
Takubo, running as an independent, finished third with 4,131 votes.
Sugimoto secured 13,522 votes, with voter turnout rising to 60.54%, a record high for the city.
The election, triggered by Takubo’s ouster, featured nine candidates, the most in Ito’s history, and highlighted public demand for transparency and accountability in local government.
