HMRC is urging UK workers, especially seasonal employees in retail, hospitality, and warehousing, to check their pay this Christmas to ensure they receive at least the National Minimum or Living Wage.
The agency warns that all workers, including temporary staff, must be paid for all working time—such as opening/closing duties, training, and unpaid shifts—and cannot have wages reduced by uniform or equipment costs.
In 2024-25, £5.8 million in unpaid wages were identified for 25,200 workers, with £4.2 million in penalties issued to 750 employers.
Workers can verify pay confidentially via GOV.UK, even after leaving a job, or contact the Acas helpline for free advice.
