A suspicious fire destroyed two main structures at the Hunter’s Mountain Mi’kmaw cultural camp in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, early December 14, 2025, during the site’s seasonal dismantling.
No injuries occurred, and the camp was unoccupied.
The blaze, which consumed one building completely and severely damaged another, is under investigation by RCMP with support from the Nova Scotia Fire Marshal.
The camp, established in September to protest logging on sacred lands, had hosted Mi’kmaq elders and allies and featured a Sacred Fire that burned for 83 days before being extinguished on December 2.
Indigenous leaders and supporters expressed grief but reaffirmed their commitment to rebuild and continue protecting the mountain’s ecological and spiritual sites.
