China approves first level-3 self-driving cars for limited commercial use in Beijing and Chongqing.
China has granted its first national approvals for level-3 autonomous driving vehicles, allowing Changan Auto and BAIC Motor’s electric sedans to operate with conditional automation on designated roads in Chongqing and Beijing.
The vehicles, limited to speeds of 50 km/h and 80 km/h respectively, can handle single-lane highway and expressway driving without constant driver supervision, marking a shift from testing to early commercial deployment.
The move follows a formal review process and reflects China’s push to lead in autonomous vehicle technology, with trials managed through ride-hailing services.
Regulators are now holding automakers accountable for system failures, especially after a fatal Xiaomi SU7 crash in March.
