Australia’s Codrington Wind Farm to close, leaving turbine bases buried, sparking debate over decommissioning standards.
Australia’s Codrington Wind Farm, once the nation’s largest, is set to close after 25 years, with Pacific Blue proposing to leave its 14 concrete and steel turbine foundations buried in south-west Victoria.
The plan, under review by local and state agencies, departs from the 1999 permit requiring full site reinstatement, citing no international standard for decommissioning such infrastructure.
The company will dismantle above-ground components, cover remaining foundations with soil and vegetation, and fund research into recycling turbine blades.
The decision, pending final approval, could set a precedent as at least 31 other Australian wind farms near end-of-life.
El parque eólico australiano de Codrington cerrará, dejando enterradas las bases de las turbinas, provocando un debate sobre los estándares de desmantelamiento.
