Prafulla Govinda Baruah, chairman of The Assam Tribune and a recipient of the Padma Shri, died at 94 in Guwahati on December 15, 2025, after age-related health issues.
He led India’s oldest Northeast English daily since 1997, guiding it through decades of change while upholding journalistic integrity.
A respected figure in media, literature, and education, Baruah also founded institutions like RG Baruah College and the magazine Goriyasi.
National and regional leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, mourned his passing, honoring his legacy in promoting Assam’s culture, development, and ethical journalism.
His final rites were scheduled for Monday in Guwahati.
