A Syrian family reopened their Port Dalhousie shawarma restaurant in Thorold after a fire destroyed it, with community support.
Castillo Shawarma, a Syrian family-owned restaurant destroyed by arson in Port Dalhousie in September 2024, has reopened in Thorold at 46 Front St. N. The family, including brothers Kays Hannus and Shadi Alkhannous and their father Hussein and brother Mahmud, rebuilt the business after losing equipment and inventory, with support from a community fundraiser and customer loyalty.
They renovated a former fish and chips shop themselves, introducing a modern dark interior and digital menu.
The restaurant now serves shawarma wraps, kebabs, and Mediterranean dishes, open seven days a week from 11 a.m.
The fire remains unsolved, and the case is under investigation by Niagara Regional Police.
