Supreme Court orders committee to recommend vice chancellors for two Kerala universities by Dec. 18, ending a government-Governor deadlock.
The Supreme Court directed the Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia Committee to recommend vice chancellors for two Kerala universities by December 18, ending a deadlock between the state government and Governor.
The court ordered the committee to review correspondence between the Chief Minister and Chancellor and submit sealed recommendations, following disputes over appointments and prior judicial rulings.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar criticized the order, arguing it contradicts the court’s 2023 Kannur University precedent by bypassing the Chancellor’s statutory authority to appoint search committees.
The court had previously affirmed the Chancellor’s role but noted appointments remain subject to judicial review.
The matter will be reconsidered on December 18 after the committee’s report.
