A North Carolina man, released from prison in 2022, stole an ambulance, attacked paramedics, crashed into a car, and caused the death of a 74-year-old woman, leading to murder charges.

Cheyenne D. Woods, 36, was arrested in Robeson County, North Carolina, after stealing an ambulance during an EMS transport, assaulting two paramedics, and crashing into a vehicle driven by 74-year-old Marie Locklear, who died from a gunshot wound. Woods, a known violent offender with prior murder and robbery convictions, is charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a weapon, and firearm offenses. He was released from prison in 2022 after serving five years of a 10-year sentence for a 2008 killing. Sheriff Burnis Wilkins criticized the system for failing to keep repeat offenders incarcerated, calling the death a preventable tragedy. Woods is being held without bond.
