Mumbai had the highest road traffic CO₂ emissions per kilometer among India’s major cities in 2021, according to a study published in Scientific Data.
The research, part of the CHETNA project, found that high vehicle density drove emissions to 5–6 tonnes of CO₂ per km, surpassing Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, and Hyderabad.
All cities showed elevated nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide levels, with larger metros emitting more.
Per capita CO₂ emissions remained under 0.2 tonnes annually across cities.
The study used 500-meter resolution data and will inform future city dashboards, with a stakeholder workshop planned in Mumbai in February 2026.
