The King sent a real red post box to Antarctica’s Rothera Station to boost morale during winter isolation.
In December 2025, the King gifted a genuine red Royal Mail post box with his cypher to scientists at Rothera Research Station in Antarctica, following a request from station support assistant Kirsten Shaw.
Delivered by the RRS Sir David Attenborough after the continent’s long winter darkness, the post box replaces a hand-painted replica and will be installed in the station’s new Discovery Building.
It supports the vital mail route that sends letters from Antarctica to the UK via the Falkland Islands and RAF Brize Norton, helping maintain morale and connections during the isolated winter months when only 22 staff remain.
The gesture follows the King’s earlier personal message to researchers and has drawn attention from Adelie penguins near the site.
