Indian woman Kavita Chand becomes first to summit Antarctica’s Mount Vinson, Dec. 12.
Kavita Chand, a 40-year-old mountaineer from Almora, Uttarakhand, became the first Indian woman to summit Mount Vinson in Antarctica, reaching the 4,892-meter peak on December 12.
The achievement marks a key milestone in her Seven Summits quest, following her previous ascent of Mount Elbrus.
Based in Mumbai, Chand led a nine-member Indian team supported by guide Mingma David Sherpa and mountaineer Bharath Thammineni’s company, Boots and Crampon.
The expedition, which began December 3 from India via Chile, faced extreme cold and unpredictable weather.
Chand, a former media professional who left her corporate job in 2024, carried the Indian tricolour to the summit and aims to inspire professionals to pursue fitness and ambition.
A top endurance runner, she is also pursuing the Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Challenge.
