India nears completion of largest rail electrification project, cutting emissions and boosting efficiency.
Indian Railways has electrified 99.2% of its broad-gauge network, nearing completion of one of the world’s largest rail electrification projects.
Since 2019, over 33,000 route kilometers—equivalent to Germany’s entire rail system—have been electrified at an average rate of more than 15 km per day.
This transition has reduced diesel use, cut emissions, lowered costs, and improved train speed and reliability.
The system now operates 812 MW of solar and 93 MW of wind power, with 100 MW under a round-the-clock renewable agreement and 1,500 MW in planning via hybrid solar-wind-storage solutions.
Modern, energy-efficient locomotives with regenerative braking are also being deployed, supporting India’s net-zero carbon goal by 2030.
La India está a punto de completar el mayor proyecto de electrificación ferroviaria, reduciendo las emisiones e impulsando la eficiencia.
