India to conduct first fully digital census in 2027 with mobile data collection, self-enumeration, and caste data digitization.
India has approved ₹11,718.24 crore for its first fully digital census in 2027, to be conducted in two phases: houselisting and housing census from April to September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027, with remote areas completing earlier.
Nearly 30 lakh field workers will use mobile apps on Android and iOS to collect data, supported by a central monitoring portal and a new web map tool.
For the first time, caste data will be collected electronically, and self-enumeration will be available.
The Census-as-a-Service model will deliver clean, machine-readable data to government ministries, enhancing policy-making.
The initiative will generate 1.02 crore man-days of employment and strengthen local digital capacity.
