DRI seized 15 tons of illegally smuggled red sanders timber in Chennai, arresting four suspects.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) disrupted a major red sanders smuggling operation in Chennai, seizing 15 metric tons of the protected timber valued at Rs 6.26 crore.
The operation, conducted from December 9 to 12, targeted warehouses across the city and outskirts based on intelligence about illegal storage.
Authorities recovered 169 Grade A logs, along with additional logs, roots, and furniture, some hidden in HDPE wrapping and disguised as household goods.
Four suspects were arrested, including a key operative, two transport/packing associates, and a supplier intermediary.
Red sanders, listed under CITES Appendix II and India’s Wildlife Protection Act, is restricted for export.
The seized goods were confiscated under the Customs Act, 1962.
